Will the stock market always return 10%?
5-year, 10-year, 20-year and 30-year S&P 500 returns. Below is a table showing the S&P 500's price returns over different timeframes, as of the end of 2022. The table shows that while the market has a long-term average annual return of 10%, year-to-year returns can vary significantly.
Expectations for return from the stock market
Most investors would view an average annual rate of return of 10% or more as a good ROI for long-term investments in the stock market. However, keep in mind that this is an average. Some years will deliver lower returns -- perhaps even negative returns.
How Often Do Stock Market Corrections Occur? Corrections occur more frequently than crashes. On average, the market declined 10% or more every 1.2 years since 1980, so you could even say corrections are common.
By investing in shares, one can expect to earn through capital appreciation, i.e., on the gains made on the capital (principal invested) when the share price rises. The gains or the profits from shares can go as high as 100 percent or more. There is, however, no guarantee of capital appreciation.
General ROI: A positive ROI is generally considered good, with a normal ROI of 5-7% often seen as a reasonable expectation. However, a strong general ROI is something greater than 10%. Return on Stocks: On average, a ROI of 7% after inflation is often considered good, based on the historical returns of the market.
A 20% return is possible, but it's a pretty significant return, so you either need to take risks on volatile investments or spend more time invested in safer investments.
Stock market corrections are not uncommon
As you can see in the chart below, a decline of at least 10% occurred in 10 out of 20 years, or 50% of the time, with an average pullback of 15%. And in two additional years, the decline was just short of 10%.
Some traders follow something called the "10 a.m. rule." The stock market opens for trading at 9:30 a.m., and the time between 9:30 a.m. and 10 a.m. often has significant trading volume. Traders that follow the 10 a.m. rule think a stock's price trajectory is relatively set for the day by the end of that half-hour.
The consensus 12-month analyst price target for the S&P 500 is 5,614, representing about 6.8% upside from current levels.
But over the long haul, you can expect your investments to grow at about 10% a year, doubling every seven years or so. Get Forbes Advisor's expert insights on investing in a variety of financial instruments, from stocks and bonds to cryptocurrencies and more.
Can you turn 10k into 100k in stock market?
If the historical stock market return is 7% a year, it will take eight years to grow your money from $10,000 to $100,000.
Private investors with limited time may not want to have this many, but 25-35 stocks is a popular level for many successful investors (for example, Terry Smith) who run what are generally regarded as relatively high concentration portfolios.
Imagine you wish to amass $3000 monthly from your investments, amounting to $36,000 annually. If you park your funds in a savings account offering a 2% annual interest rate, you'd need to inject roughly $1.8 million into the account.
Reinvest Your Payments
The truth is that most investors won't have the money to generate $1,000 per month in dividends; not at first, anyway. Even if you find a market-beating series of investments that average 3% annual yield, you would still need $400,000 in up-front capital to hit your targets. And that's okay.
In the current environment, a return of between 8% and 10% year-on-year is positive. If you take on more risk, the returns could be higher—but so too could the losses. Consider the longterm review, rather than looking at an asset's performance across a six-month window, for a more sustainable approach to investing.
Stock exchange markets are considered inherently unstable and unpredictable, however, in the long run, they eventually tend to rise, and though a return as good as 15% each year might not always be achievable in the stock market, an annual return of around 15% may be possible over the foreseeable future, but remember, ...
Try Flipping Things
Another way to double your $2,000 in 24 hours is by flipping items. This method involves buying items at a lower price and selling them for a profit. You can start by looking for items that are in high demand or have a high resale value. One popular option is to start a retail arbitrage business.

Percentage Of Stocks with 70%+ Declines & No Recovery
In 2013, J.P. Morgan gave a wider perspective on the risks. Using the Russell 3000 returns since 1980, JPM concluded that roughly 40% of all stocks had suffered a permanent 70%+ decline from their peak value.
The Dow Jones did not return to its peak close of September 3, 1929, for 25 years, until November 23, 1954.
What was the biggest stock market drop in history?
The largest single-day percentage declines for the S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average both occurred on Oct. 19, 1987 with the S&P 500 falling by 20.5 percent and the Dow falling by 22.6 percent. Two of the four largest percentage declines for the Dow occurred on consecutive days — Oct. 28 and 29 in 1929.
You can do a quick analysis, adjust your trading strategy and get into a good position well after the crowd pulls the trigger on a gap play. Here is how. Let the index/stock trade for the first fifteen minutes and then use the high and low of this “fifteen minute range” as support and resistance levels.
It is not a hard and fast rule, but rather a guideline that has been observed by many traders over the years. The logic behind this rule is that if the market has not reversed by 11 am EST, it is less likely to experience a significant trend reversal during the remainder of the trading day.
Trading on a 10- or 15-minute chart requires less constant focus because bars/candles are occurring over a longer period. If you wait for candles to close (don't have to) there is at least a 10 or 15-minute period between possible actions. Traders on this time frame may only be taking one or two trades a day.
Third, many Wall Street analysts predict that the S&P 500 will jump in 2024, but with a lower return than last year. Sure, they're guessing, just as I am. However, they think that moderating inflation and the potential for interest rate cuts should be good for stocks.
