What is the Bible verse about the love of money?
A popular current text, the King James Version shows 1 Timothy 6:10 to be: For the love of money is the root of all of evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. (The full verse is shown but Bold added being the subject of this page.)
1 Timothy 6:9-11, NKJV
For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. But you, O man of God, flee these things and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, gentleness.”
“Whoever loves money never has enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with their income. This too is meaningless.” “But remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your ancestors, as it is today.”
JESUS TEACHING ON LOVE OF MONEY Jesus taught that one of the requirements of God's above money or wealth or material things. "Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal for where your treasure is there will also be your heart.
All wrongdoing can be traced to an excessive attachment to material wealth. This saying comes from the writings of the Apostle Paul . It is sometimes shortened to “ Money is the root of all evil .”
“Lazy hands make for poverty, but diligent hands bring wealth.” “Those who work their land will have abundant food, but those who chase fantasies have no sense.” “Dishonest money dwindles away, but whoever gathers money little by little makes it grow.”
Philippians 4:19: And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus. Proverbs 10:22: The blessing of the Lord makes a person rich, and he adds no sorrow with it. 2 Corinthians 9:8: And God will generously provide all you need.
1 Timothy 6:17-19
17 Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment.
Work and by extension, money, fulfil material needs but needn't go much beyond that. Jesus willed and provided for people's physical needs – sometimes in abundance (Matthew 14:20). Wealth can indeed signify a blessing.
He who is greedy for gain troubles his own house, But he who hates bribes will live. Proverbs 15:27. This proverb speaks to the issue of integrity. So many people bow down to the almighty dollar and do some outright questionable things to obtain riches.
Why is money important to God?
God desires that His children use their wealth and prosperity to bring about positive change in the world. He calls us to be good stewards of the resources He has entrusted to us, using them to bless others and advance His kingdom on Earth.
Matthew 6:24-26 New Living Translation (NLT)
“No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other; you will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and be enslaved to money.
Jesus advised, “Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal. Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be” (Matthew 6:19-21). The problem with money is not money itself; the problem is our hearts.
Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money” (Matthew 6:24).
The temptation to gain more money leads people to work long hours, neglect God, family, and even gain money through sinful means. It's been rightly said that money is an article that may be used as a universal provider of everything—except happiness!
The word, avarice, means the greed for money and other material. However, there is a rare and obsolete word that most exactly means the love of money — pleonexia.
3 Wealth and riches are in their houses, and their righteousness endures forever. 4 Even in darkness light dawns for the upright, for those who are gracious and compassionate and righteous. 5 Good will come to those who are generous and lend freely, who conduct their affairs with justice.
Proverbs 11:24-25 NLT
Give freely and become more wealthy; be stingy and lose everything. The generous will prosper; those who refresh others will themselves be refreshed.
It's Proverbs 21:20, “Precious treasure and oil are in a wise man's dwelling, but a foolish man devours it.” That means the wise person saves. The only way to achieve financial freedom is to live on less than you earn and to do it for a very long time.
Psalm 112
Wealth and riches are in his house, and his righteousness endures forever.” Psalm 112 is an assurance to those who reverence God and delight in His commandments. The blessings are not limited to the individual but extend to their descendants as well.
What does Jesus say about wealth?
Jesus is speaking to the negative aspects of riches in the Parable of the Sower when he warns that we can be “choked by life's worries, riches and pleasures.” (Luke 8:14).
God does not want us to live in poverty; we have discovered that there is nothing inherently spiritual in poverty. Neither is there any sin in wealth. However, God does not desire for a Christian to live in worldly lavishness while His work needs money and other Christians go without food and clothing.
In Hebrews 13, Paul reminds us to “keep our lives free from the love of money, and be content with what you have.” No matter how big your dreams are, remember to be content now. The God of the universe is for you, and that is more than enough.
Those who love money will never have enough. How meaningless to think that wealth brings true happiness! The more you have, the more people come to help you spend it.
12For wisdom is a defence, and money is a defence: but the excellency of knowledge is, that wisdom giveth life to them that have it.
