What happens at the end of term life insurance if you are still alive?
If your term life policy expires while you're still alive, your insurance company will notify you that your coverage has ended, and you no longer need to pay your premium. If you still need coverage, it may be possible to renew your policy for a set period of time.
Term life is typically less expensive than a permanent whole life policy – but unlike permanent life insurance, term policies have no cash value, no payout after the term expires, and no value other than a death benefit.
Another reason companies are able keep term life premiums lower is that premiums are almost never refunded. This is normally the case even if you cancel your policy. So in most cases you shouldn't expect any money back after your term expires.
Because whole life insurance never expires, you do not need to worry about outliving it. However, your policy may pay out before your death if you live to a certain age. Most whole life policies endow at age 100, while some recently issued policies now offer a maturation age of 121 years.
Whole life insurance is a form of permanent life insurance (as is universal and variable life). Permanent life insurance policies will allow you to access the cash portion of your account while you're alive. Term life insurance, meanwhile, does not have a cash element for policyholders to access.
Term Life Insurance Cancellation
Cancellation is straightforward with a term life policy. You should contact your life insurance company with a written notice and advise them you are ending the policy. You can also simply stop paying premiums to get the same result.
Can you cash out term life insurance? Since a term life insurance policy doesn't come with a cash value component, it's not possible to cash it out. This policy solely includes a death benefit that your beneficiaries may receive if you die before the end of the policy's term.
If retirement savings, investments and Social Security are enough to provide for final expenses and your survivors who still rely on your income—you may not need life insurance in your 60s. In some situations, however, having life insurance after 60 makes sense.
A life insurance policy should last at least as many years as you plan to spend paying off your mortgage or credit card debt. This can protect your loved ones from being responsible for your debts if something happens to you.
Most importantly, converting a policy from term to whole life is often possible even if your health has worsened. In some cases, converting your policy may mean you don't have to apply for a new policy or go through a medical exam or underwriting.
What is better whole life or term insurance?
If you only need coverage for a few years while your children are growing up, for example, then term life insurance may be the right choice. But if you want lifetime coverage and the ability to build cash value, then consider whole life insurance.
A more complex product than term life insurance. Higher premiums than term life insurance.
Life insurance can cover end-of-life expenses
A good reason for seniors to have life insurance is to cover final expenses, says Lori Gross, financial and investment advisor at Outlook Financial Center in Troy, Ohio. Insurance makes it so you're "not leaving that burden on a loved one."
If you're in a permanent life insurance policy, then you're able to withdraw cash while you're alive through loans, withdrawals, or surrendering the policy.
The good news is that you likely won't need to worry about having a claim denied if you're truthful with your life insurance company from the start. Instances of lying, criminal activity, or dangerous behavior that's not disclosed upfront could all be reasons life insurance won't pay out.
When is term life insurance not worth it? Term life insurance probably isn't worth the costs if you don't have any significant debts to pass on to your loved ones or you don't have dependents or a spouse that you'd leave in a bind by passing away.
Determining whether life insurance is worth it as a senior really depends on your specific budget and goals. But if you don't have enough saved to cover end-of-life expenses, are eligible for a good rate and want to leave something for your loved ones, it may be worth acting now.
A major advantage of term insurance is that it is the more affordable option. So if you have a tight budget, it's often better to have the proper amount of life insurance coverage versus overthinking how much should be term or permanent coverage.
Your health has changed.
If your health has worsened and you need coverage for a longer period of time, a conversion may be your best (or only) option. You likely won't have to redo your medical exam. In most cases, your new policy will be priced in the same risk class that your term contract was.
Whole life and universal life insurance have many similarities, and both are great options to help protect your family. The main difference is that whole life usually doesn't change—many features are guaranteed for life—while universal life offers flexibility.
Why do many experts recommend term life insurance over whole life insurance?
Term life insurance can provide coverage during those years when your income is necessary for those who depend on you. Since it's generally more affordable than most permanent life insurance, term policies can be a good fit for those who have a limited budget but need coverage.
If budgeting is your biggest concern, term life insurance may be the best choice. If you have many dependents, whole life insurance may be a better route. However, if financial planning and cash value are most important to you, universal life insurance may be a strong option.
After the 20-year level term ends, your coverage expires. By outliving your policy, both the death benefit and two decades of premiums are lost. Terms are available in different lengths, typically from 10 to 30 years, so it's important to select one that you think will be sufficient for your financial needs.
For example, term life insurance policies pay out a death benefit when the insured passes away, but these policies do not include a cash value account. Whole life insurance policies, on the other hand, typically include a cash value account that may accumulate limited interest and capped returns.
The $10,000 refers to the face value of the policy, otherwise known as the death benefit, and does not represent the cash value of life insurance policy. A $10,000 term life insurance policy has no cash value.
