Invest in a high-yield cd or savings account?
A CD typically pays more interest, but access to your money is limited.
A CD typically pays more interest, but access to your money is limited.
Whether it be $5,000, $1,000 or some other figure, a CD offers many times more interest-earning power than regular savings accounts do. And those rates will stay steady for the full CD term, providing some much-needed predictability and reliability.
Top Nationwide Rate (APY) | Total Earnings | |
---|---|---|
1 year | 6.18% | $ 618 |
18 months | 5.80% | $ 887 |
2 year | 5.60% | $ 1,151 |
3 year | 5.50% | $ 1,742 |
If you're saving for a short-term goal, like a down payment for a house in two years, a high-yield savings account may be the most appropriate place for your money. Conversely, for long-term aspirations, like retirement or saving for a child's college education, it could be beneficial to ride the investment wave.
One major drawback of a CD is that account holders can't easily access their money if an unanticipated need arises. They typically have to pay a penalty for early withdrawals, which can eat up interest and can even result in the loss of principal.
Interest Rate Risk
When rates are high, your CDs will generally yield a better return. But when rates are low, money held in CDs won't grow as much. CDs carry interest rate risk in that it's possible to lock in savings at one rate, only to see rates climb.

Right now, the average interest rate for a 5-year CD is 1.46%. If you put $10,000 into a CD with that rate right now, after five years you'd have earned $751.63, for a total of $10,751.63. As noted above, though, you can likely get a much better interest rate if you shop around and find a CD from an online bank.
Penalties. This is the main disadvantage when it comes to CDs. If you need to withdraw the funds before the CD matures, you have to pay an early withdrawal penalty. The size of the penalty can vary depending on your bank, the CD term and the yield.
How do I avoid tax on CD interest?
You can defer current taxes on CD earnings if you hold that CD in a traditional IRA or similar retirement account. Income and gains received on investments in traditional IRAs are not subject to tax until the IRA makes income distributions to the owner or—if the owner is deceased—to the owner's beneficiary.
The IRS treats interest you earn on a CD as income, whether you receive the money in cash or reinvest it in a new CD. The interest is taxable, the IRS says, in the year it is paid.
However, federally insured banks and credit unions only insure up to $250,000 per depositor per account ownership category. If you put more than this amount in a single CD, some of your money will be at risk. You can still safely invest more than $250,000 in CDs by opening accounts at multiple financial institutions.
Your money is invested, so the balance can go up and down with regular market activity. High-yield savings accounts, on the other hand, are not tied to the stock market. As such, the risk of losing money is extremely low. Even if your financial institution fails, FDIC insurance can cover a large portion of your losses.
Some disadvantages of a high-yield savings account include few withdrawal options, limitations on how many monthly withdrawals you can make, and no access to a branch network if you need it. But for most people, these aren't major issues.
Limited withdrawals
Like traditional savings accounts, some financial institutions may limit the number of withdrawals and transfers you can make from a high-yield savings account each month. Exceeding this limit could possibly result in fees or restrictions on your account.
Yes, CDs are generally still safe even if a stock market crash occurs. CDs are a type of bank account. Many accounts offer a set rate of return for a specific timeframe that won't fluctuate.
It could very well be the time to buy, especially since the Fed has indicated it will likely stop raising rates and even start cutting them in 2024. Waiting longer could be a gamble. If the Fed starts reducing the federal funds rate in 2024, that means rates on everything from mortgage to CD rates will likely decline.
Is a 12-Month CD Worth It? A 12-month CD can be a worthwhile investment if you're seeking guaranteed growth and are able to keep your money invested for a year. Before investing, be sure you're getting the best one-year CD rates by shopping around and comparing rates from different banks.
High-yield CDs are typically low-risk investments, so they may not be a great fit for those hunting for higher returns. However, if you're searching for a secure place to safeguard your funds while earning a guaranteed return on investment, then high-yield CDs may be the right choice.
Can you live off CD interest?
As part of a portfolio that includes cash, CDs can provide stability and security. However, CDs are unlikely to provide you with the returns you need to build wealth for the future or live off the interest — unless you already have a large amount of money and ladder your CDs to avoid penalties.
CD rates continued to climb in 2023
The national average APY for one-year CDs ended the year 0.7 percent higher than at the beginning of the year, while the average for five-year CDs ended the year 0.3 percent higher than at the start.

First, max out any 401(k) matching your employer offers. As Allen explains, "It's literally free money on the table." Then, invest in the stock market, consider CDs, money market accounts and high-yield savings accounts, and add some real estate to the mix, too.
Most easily done through buying stocks, which historically yielded 9%. If this persists, your $5,000 turns into $20,000 in 16 years.
