Do people in private equity make a lot of money?
Absolute multiples of any average job out there. You can make a few hundred thousand dollars after you have 2 years of post grad banking experience, make mid 6 figures post MBA after a couple of years and if you can get on a partner type of track make well into the 7 figures when you get to the partner level.
Working at a Private Equity Firm
Given that a PE firm with $1 billion of assets under management (AUM) might have no more than two dozen investment professionals and that 20% of gross profits can generate tens of millions of dollars in fees, it is easy to see why the industry attracts top talent.

Private equity professionals work long hours and are highly competitive and must think critically, and have a passion for financial investing deals, not just following the markets.
Some of the world's richest people have made their fortunes through private equity. For example, Warren Buffett, the chairman of Berkshire Hathaway, is a major investor in private equity firms. Buffett has said that he believes private equity is one of the best ways to generate long-term returns.
While the travel will be less, the work in private equity is very stressful and demanding, so the hours you actually spend working may be more stressful or mentally demanding.
I'll tell you right now, private equity is a pretty hard and busy job. Any deal-oriented job is going to involve intense, short sprints and private equity is no exception. It's not quite at the level of investment banking hours, but you'll still be working a lot.
Private Equity Associate Lifestyle and Hours
At many smaller funds and middle-market funds, you can expect to work 60-70 hours per week, mostly on weekdays, with occasional weekend work when deals heat up.
Private Equity Associate salary in India ranges between ₹ 2.5 Lakhs to ₹ 45.0 Lakhs with an average annual salary of ₹ 11.6 Lakhs. Salary estimates are based on 132 latest salaries received from Private Equity Associates.
Vice President Private Equity Salary. $115,000 is the 25th percentile. Salaries below this are outliers. $190,000 is the 75th percentile.
Do private equity firms lay off employees?
Private-equity firms typically run leaner operations than banks and so have less need to cut jobs during slowdowns. But some have laid off about 5% to 15% of their staff, said Sasha Jensen, founder and chief executive of Jensen Partners, an executive-search firm for alternative-asset managers.
The most prestigious private equity firms are the ones that have a track record of consistent performance over a long period of time. These firms will have a strong reputation for their expertise in identifying profitable investments, managing distressed companies, and implementing successful exit strategies.
Private equity is a high-risk investment and you are unlikely to be protected if something goes wrong.
Private equity firms buy companies. Then, they operate and try to improve those companies. Finally, they try to sell these companies at a profit. Private equity employees are compensated for making good investment decisions.
That's thanks in part to the man who is arguably the most famous investor in the world: Warren Buffett. Buffett is no stranger to private equity. In fact, he's been investing in it for decades.
Private Equity Career Training
PE firms are small, tight-knit, and full of extremely smart and highly motivated people.
1. Investment Banker. Roles in investing banking are highly sought after. For investment bankers, it's often a higher competition to land a role in one of the largest firms.
Many MDs and Partners stay in private equity indefinitely because there's no reason to leave unless they're forced out or the firm collapses.
For a student looking to break into one of the top 10 PE firms, your chance is 1 in 300 or 0.33%. To break into one of the top 10 hedge fund firms, your chance is 1 in 147 or 0.68%.
Private equity interviews can be challenging, but for most candidates, winning interviews is much tougher than succeeding in those interviews. You do not need to be a math genius or a gifted speaker; you just need to understand the recruiting process and basic arithmetic.
Is private equity a lot of math?
The short answer: For M&A Investment Banking and Private Equity, you don't need anything beyond basic arithmetic. We are talking about addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Throw in some percentages and growth rates and some means and medians. That's the math needed for Investment Banking.
Private equity exit options and opportunities
Those who wish to broaden their horizons or simply desire a change of pace will often migrate to similar sectors such as hedge funds or portfolio management. Additional exit options include: Being hired as a chief analyst by another firm.
According to most of the participants, an average of 25% of the teams in PE are currently working remotely.
Getting an MBA can help you pursue a career in private equity. Most of the top private equity firms either require an MBA or give strong preference to job candidates with an MBA.
However, in general, private equity firms may offer higher salaries than bulge bracket banks, due to the nature of the work involved. Private equity firms often require their employees to put in longer hours and work on more complex deals than those at bulge bracket banks, which can lead to higher salaries.
