Preparing the perfect steak at home can seem like a daunting task. Attempting to get the perfect sear, acing your desired doneness, and dodging splattering oil can cause even the most avid home cooks some stress. That being said, what if we told you there was an easier way? Enter: the magic air fryer. Just pop your steak into the air fryer (no need to sear beforehand!), and in a little over 10 minutes, you'll have a perfectly done steak to slather with homemade herb butter. If you're looking for a Valentine's Day dinner to impress without any added stress (or a messy kitchen), turn to this steak dinner.

The best part? This recipe works for a variety of cuts of steak and desired doneness. Read on for all our tips on how to create perfect steak in the air fryer:

Tips & variations for perfect air fryer steak:
Type of steak. We love using a thick-cut ribeye in this recipe, but if you prefer a different cut, you can still use the air fryer! Just be sure to adjust the time according to the thickness of your steak.
Your compound butter. We love the combination of chives, parsley, rosemary, and thyme with the minced garlic here, but if you want to switch it up, you can use any combination of soft and hard herbs that you like. Others that might be particularly delicious include oregano, basil, or even sage.
Make it into an appetizer. Looking for a bite-size version of this recipe? Try our air fryer steak bites instead.

How long does it take to cook steak in the air fryer?
It depends on two things: the thickness of your steak, and your desired doneness. For medium with a bone-in ribeye, our steak was done around 12-14 minutes. For medium-rare with the same cut, your steak will most likely be done around 10 minutes. Adjust your cook time depending on the thickness of your steak, and how you like it cooked.

Steak temperature guide:
The best way to tell a steak's temperature is to use a meat thermometer. Also, keep in mind that your steak will continue to cook for a bit after you take it out of the air fryer, so if you’re hoping for medium-rare, you should pull your steak when it reads 130°. It will rest up to 135°, so that when you slice it, it will still be perfectly pink and juicy. Depending on your preferred doneness, follow our temperature guide to cook your steak to perfection:
Rare. 125°
Medium-rare. 135°
Medium. 145°

Serving ideas for steak:
We personally love serving a rich steak with a potato side (melting potatoes or creamy mashed potatoes would be a perfect choice), and a veggie (garlic-Parmesan roasted carrots, a garlic-herb wedge salad, or cacio e pepe Brussels sprouts), but any of our side dishes for steak would work great here.

We included a simple recipe for a garlic-herb butter here, but if you're looking to go beyond that, our Tuscan butter, red wine butter and cowboy butter would all upgrade your steak game.
