TD Bank Review (April 2024) | Marketwatch (2024)

We rate TD Bank’s checking accounts 4.6 out of 5 stars. This is partly because the bank gives customers a lot of options:

  • TD Convenience Checking
  • TD Beyond Checking
  • TD Simple Checking
  • TD Essential Banking
  • TD 60 Plus Checking

Plus, none of these accounts has a minimum opening deposit requirement. They also let account holderssend and receive money with Zelle, and there are no fees to use TD Bank ATMs. With the exception of the TD Essential Banking account, they offeroverdraft protectionand a 0.25% rate reduction on home equity loans and lines of credit.

TD Bank did not make our list of thebest checking accountsin the industry, but it is still a great option.

TD Convenience Checking

The Convenience Checking account can be a great option for the average customer who wants simple banking features. It doesn’t pay interest, but you get a discount on your first order of checks (depending on the style). Like all of the bank’s checking and savings accounts, this account comes with mobile check deposits through TD’s app.

To avoid the $15 monthly fee, you need to have a daily minimum balance of $100 or the primary account holder needs to be between 17 and 23 years old.

Through Dec. 31, 2023, new customers can get a $200 bonus when they open a TD Convenience Checking account and receive at least $500 in qualifying direct deposits within 60 days. The bonus is paid within 180 days after the account is opened.

TD Beyond Checking

TD’s interest-bearing Beyond Checking account is best for customers who are able to maintain higher daily balances. There’s a $25 monthly fee, but this can be avoided one of three ways:

  • Receive $5,000 or more in direct deposits each statement period
  • Maintain a daily balance of $2,500 or more
  • Have a combined balance of $25,000 or more across all of your linked TD deposit, mortgage and home equity loan or home equity line of credit (HELOC) accounts

There are several benefits to Beyond Checking:

  • No fees from TD Bank at out-of-network ATMs
  • Reimbursem*nt of non-TD ATM fees when you have a minimum daily balance of $2,500
  • Free standard checks or discounts on some styles
  • Freemoney orders, bank checks, stop-payment orders and incoming wires
  • Reimbursem*nt for two overdraft fees a year
  • One free outgoing wire per statement period
  • Reimbursem*nt for expedited bill payments
  • Waived monthly fee on one TD Simple Checking account and any savings accounts

New customers can earn a $300 bonus for opening a TD Beyond Checking account and making at least $2,500 in qualifying direct deposits within 60 days. The offer lasts through Dec. 31, and the bonus is paid within 180 days after the account is opened.

TD Simple Checking

TD Simple Checking is best for customers who don’t typically keep much in their checking accounts. It doesn’t have a minimum balance requirement, but it also doesn’t pay interest. It has a $5.99 monthly fee that can’t be waived. Simple Checking account holders get a discount when ordering their first set of checks.

TD Essential Banking

TD Essential Banking is the bank’s bare-bones checking account. It’s the only checking option that doesn’t let account holders spend more than their balance, but this means there are never any overdraft fees. It’s also the only one that doesn’t have check-writing capability.

The monthly fee for Essential Banking is $4.95. The fee is waived only if the primary account holder is 13 to 17 years old.

TD 60 Plus Checking

TD 60 Plus Checking is for account holders who are at least 60 years old. There’s a $10 monthly fee, but it can be waived if the account has at least $250 each day. The account earns interest, and customers get these benefits:

  • Free standard checks or discounts on some styles
  • Free money orders and bank checks
  • Free paper statements
TD Student Checking

TD Bank doesn’t have a checking account that’s specifically for students. Instead, it waives the monthly fee on select accounts:

  • TD Bank Convenience Checking:If the primary account holder is between the ages of 17 and 23 (with the waiver ending after high school)
  • TD Bank Essential Banking:If the primary account holder is between the ages of 13 and 17 (with the waiver ending after college)

New TD Bank Convenience Checking customers between the ages of 17 and 23 earn a $100 bonus for opening an account and making 15 debit card purchases in the first 60 days. The bonus is paid within 180 days after you open the account.
