It is highly unlikely damage will occur, however as with any home upgrade you probably want to protect your investment so that you can keep them looking and functioning like new for many years to come.

To read about why the above-listed items could compromise your granite countertops continue reading below and find out what to do instead to keep your kitchen countertops in their best condition.
How Do Harsh Cleaners Harm My Granite Countertop and What to do Instead?
Most, if not all, cleaners you see at local stores should not be used on your granite countertops. For example, using Windex on your countertops can cause pitting and strip off the sealer.
You should not use bleach for many surfaces, and your granite countertops are one of them. Bleach can both cause staining and ruin the sealant on the countertops.
One thing I love to clean with is vinegar with water and lemon. These should not be used on your granite countertops, and neither should anything with ammonia as an ingredient. Same as above, these cleaners can wear away the sealant, and ammonia can cause scratches on the counter.
While soap is not recommended, you can use it as long as you make sure to wash it all off once you are done. While soap will not damage the sealant like those above, it can cause a buildup on your countertops, dimming the shine.
The best thing to clean your granite countertops with is simply warm water with a sponge or other type of soft cloth.
One other note about cleaning your granite countertops never use anything abrasive or any types of scrubbing or scouring pads.
How Does Excess Weight Damage My Granite Countertops?
Placing a lot of weight on granite countertops can cause them to crack and split. This means do not sit or stand on them. If you are making a large dinner, try to set as much as possible in areas where there is more support. In case there are areas not well supported, do not lean on your countertops because this could cause them to crack and split as well. However, if the install is done correctly this is a nonissue.
How to Keep Heat from Damaging Granite Countertops
While granite countertops are extremely heat resistant, they can still be damaged by very hot pots, pans, and other types of cooking appliances placed on them. Different types of heat sources used while cooking can be slow cookers, roasting pans, deep fryers, and air-fryers.
Extremely hot items setting on your granite countertop over a long period of time harm the sealant and the finish. Once the sealer thins, the granite countertops may start holding bacteria and other types of debris. Repeatedly sitting hot items on the countertops can cause them to crack and leave black marks.
The best thing you can do when setting down hot pots, pans, and appliances to prevent damaging your granite countertops is to place potholders or other heat-resistant materials first. This will create a barrier between the direct heat and the countertop. It’s as easy practice that will keep your countertops in tip top shape.
Why Shouldn’t I Use Knives on my Granite Countertop?
Using knives on your granite countertop is perfectly ok however, using them without caution and applying force can cause scratches that damage the sealant, allowing bacteria or liquid to seep in. Using knives on the countertop can also cause chips and dings, and it can also cause your knives to become dull.
When using knives, always use a chopping board and not your granite countertops.
How Does Leaving Liquid on the Granite Countertop Damage it?
Spills are going to happen; it’s just a part of life. When you have any type of liquid spill onto your granite countertop, you want to clean it off, so it does not sit for a long time. Sealed granite and high-quality granite countertops are less likely to absorb liquids. However, if it’s time for new sealer, the water or liquid may cause dark spots. There are some liquids that can leave stains quicker than other types. A few examples of these are red wine, fruit punch, coffee, tomato juice, and other acidic juices.
When a spill happens, simply clean them up with warm water or a paper towel. If you seal your countertops regularly, you don’t have much to worry about.
Summary
As you can see, it can be easy to keep your granite countertop from getting damaged by simply knowing a few dos and don’ts when caring for them. Granite countertops are one of the most durable and long-lasting countertops you can have in your home; all you have to do is avoid damaging them.
